7eleven

Today we wnt to 7eleven and they have no healthy stuff there. Most healthy stuff it take time to make and u have to put things together. 7eleven have candy and soda slushes and things thats not healthy because thats what people want. People dont want healthy stuff because it take to long to cook or it take to many different things to make it.

Corner Stores

Today we went to 7 Eleven to look at some the things they were selling and to see they were any different form what we are used to seeing. Going into 7 Eleven was normal for me. It wasn't nothing that i haven't seen before. But it was nice to be there.

7Eleven

today was like normal day to me because i been going into alot of unhealthy stores such as the one we went into today7Elevln we saw alot of unhealthy food there mostly there where just junk food in things with alot of sugar in the products that people buy all the time.

Corner Stores

Today we walked down to 7-Eleven on 15th Street. They sell ice cream in the frozen section, video games, DVDs, fruits, vegetables, and soda in the soda section. I saw potato chips in the chips section. In the dairy section, they sell yogurt, milk, ice cream and ice cream bars. I bought Brisk yesterday. They also sell Slurpee. They also sell drinks, chips, candies. There were Indian cashiers. They make and serve hot dogs, pizza, wings to people.
A Day At 7 Eleven...........................

Today we went to 7 Eleven convenience store to take a locate some of they products it sells and or distributes. None of the products seemed to be organic and majority of the food seemed to be cheap and conveniently processed fast food in a sense. The prices were pretty low for the most part but in most cases that is not the only thing that matters. The cost of a bag of chips varied between 79 cents and went as high as 3 dollars and 49 cents. The cost of drinks also varied with the cheapest drink costing only one dollar for a liter of juice. This just so happens to be the popular brisk iced tea line. 7 Eleven sold chicken wings, taco rolls and precooked pizza. As well as a small section for convenience items like deodorant, toothbrushes, soap etc.......

7 Eleven

Today we walked down to 7 Eleven. There wasn't many healthy foods to choose from, but it was a lot of other things to choose from. The trip wasn't very interesting because I have already been there before. I did get a chance to eat some very delicious m&m cookies from 7 Eleven though. That was the best part of the trip. I think 7 Eleven is a alot better than most of these other stores because they have almost any type of snack you want and they also sale gift cards and other items. That is what I thought of the trip tp 7 Eleven today.

7 eleven

Today my group and I went to 7 eleven, we didn't do that much but look around and see what they have and then we all got something and left. 7 eleven and a super market is kind of the same thing. 7 eleven is smaller and it's for communitys but a super market is much bigger and it's for people from all over Philadelphia .

Visit at Seven Eleven

Today my group and I went to Seven Eleven in the 15th Street. In the Seven Eleven they got a lot of soda and red bull and water bottle and water energy drink section and they even got any kind of ice cream in the frozen section. Then I saw they got video game and DVD.And I saw they got candy in the candy section and I saw they got Tasty cake next to the candy section. After that I saw they got a hot dog grill place to make a hot dog.And I saw they cot many potato chips in the chips section. And I saw they got yogurt in the dairy section.

Today

My questions:

1.How does it feel this type of store? (too busy to answer)

2.What do people comment on your store? (too busy to answer)

3.Do you like you do? (too busy to answer)

What we did today was go to different corner stores. The stores I went into were 7 Eleven and Fresh Grocers. They were both very interesting stores to take notes on. These 2 stores are very different from each other. The difference between them is 7 eleven is small ,has a little bit of things, fresh coffee, cooked hot dogs and slurpees, while Fresh Grocers more items and some products that 7 Eleven doesn't have, some freshly cooked food, raw foods ,canned foods and frozen foods. That's what we did today.

My thoughts of a corner store:
1. There good for being a good place to buy a snack
2.Less things
3.Some old items
4.Good for some resources.
5.Good for emergency

local stores

7 eleven- it contained health bars and a few mixes that are considered beneficial, but overall it was not a healthy store it was a snack store.

local store- this store was like a corner store that contained more snacks and chips and unhealthy food that most stores have it only had bars and trail and nut mixes.

Fresh Grocer-this is a market so it contained jus about everything from snacks to fruits. It had organic fruits freshly grown as they should be. It contained unhealthy foods to giving people a option.

Of all these stores the market was the healthiest store all of the choices.

The Farmers Market

On July 8, my group and I went to a Farmer's Market , usually held out-of-doors, in public spaces, where Farmers' can sell produce to anybody who want to buy fruit and vegetables. When we went to the market, we ask the owner questions like what kind of stuff he use to grow his fruit and vegetables with, is it hard farming old way? Before we left we had some Cherry they were good that day was fun.

The urban archives

On July 15, my group and I went to the urban archives it was fun we did a lot activities of but first we all got put in to a groups of four and each group had to do something different group one had to find picture's that had to do with the questions. Group two is like group one but group two have to read to find the questions that are what's different about group one and group two. Group three had to read little’s article to find the answers to the questions. Group four had to look in this book and find their neighborhood form a thousand year ago and see how much it change from then to now. That is what we did that day it was fun.

John Street

Today we saw the former mayor of Philadelphia John Street. It was kind of cool to see me again. I think it's was 4 years ago when I had last seen him at my school. I don't remember him being so funny. The speech that he gave us we very interesting because he talked about life and what you wont to do with it. That you should also have a backup plan no matter what you want to do as a career. i also liked what he did with the luck thing. Picking names out of the hat.

John Street

Today I was in a session with John Street. He was the former mayor of Philadelphia. He was telling us some things about life and we need to focus on things to get to where we wanna be. No one can tell what we can and cannot do in the work force. We need to go to school and get our education. Don't get distracted by other people. He gave out gifts to people. A man or woman who throw stones at a barking dog will never get to there destination. That was the quote he shared with us.

Mayor John F. Street

Today my group and I went to a presentation where the former Mayor John F. Street talked to us and gave us some tools that will help us in life. As I listened to Mayor Street talk I really started to think about my future and where I wanted to go and do and how I was going to get there. Mayor Street also played a game that had me really thinking. The game was where he pulled your name out of the hat and he gave you a special prize. But it was the meaning of the game that caught my attention. The meaning of the game was based upon luck and he began to tell us don’t depend on luck in your future. Luck is not always dependable. The last words that Mayor Street said was “A woman or man who stops to throw a stone at every barking dog will never reach their destination” this is something that I will always remember. I really enjoyed hearing Mayor John F. Street speak today and I will remember everything that he said and will try to apply it to my future.

John Street

Today John Street came to speak to us. I thought it was both interesting and informative. He spoke to us about the importance of education, working hard and not giving up on dreams. I was suprised that John Street was so enthusiastic because most people that work for the government or are political seem very serious and they take their job seriously. I feel like a lot of people could relate to him a little bit more than I had expected since he grew up in different parts of North Philly. I was upset that we really didn't get a chance to ask questions because I know that he probably had the answer to most of my questions. Hopefully I get another chance to meet with him so I can ask plenty of questions. Other than that, I think his speech was nice and I felt like I learned something. I appreciate him taking the time out of his day to come speak to us.

Former Mayor John Street

John Street was the former Mayor of Philadelphia. He was playing Don't Hold Your Breath game at Gladfelter Hall.

At the one next to anderson

Today at the one next to Anderson. They were talking about someone make bits program. And before that Jhon Street came. And other he did is that he use the activity and sent ten people to volenteer in the stage. And he seen the same people on the stage before. And he want to give away stuff. And sometimes he make the two activity to make how people to not to smile and laugh and how long people to hold their breath. And the 1 guys try to say is thst he think is that he say he was playing or not.

Fresh Grocer

Yesterday, my group members and I went to Fresh Grocers near our Job at Temple. We walked around and observed the food sold in the market. A lot of their fruits and vegetables looked very fresh and healthy. Everything there looked so good that I was surprised it wasn't crowded. Our mentor Chi talked and explained to us some things like what size chickens they use to make buffalo wings. There was also organic food sold in Fresh Grocer’s, like eggs and cheese. Basically my experience there was good.

fresh grocer

Today at work the group went to The Fresh Grocer. We found several foods in various categories. There also was a great observation that was made about these different brand foods. The name brand foods with quality attends to be a lil more expensive, but those kinds are worth your buck. The brands that are just knockoffs of the real brands attend to be cheaper. The reason is because they may not contain as much quality as the more expensive brand. Stores advertise the knockoffs with low prices so more people can buy those when they want to save money. This is a main point of business, this is how they fight the competition.

Fresh Grocer

My trip to the market was kind of odd because of the fact that I wasn't actually shopping for anything. When I was walking around the store I saw some of the different prices that were labeled on the different products. The name brand cereal cost the most but the reason the store brand is cheaper because that way they don't have to pay anybody. They are able to keep the money that they make from whatever they sell. There was nice variety of fruits and vegetables to choice from and they looked very fresh.

Fresh Grocer

These are some of the items that I saw at the Fresh Grocer:
Lunchables $3.75
Murry's Hash Brown Potato Patties $4.99
Murry's Popcorn Chicken $3.99
Perdue Chicken Nuggets $4.75
Beef Back Ribs $1.79
Wise Potato Chips
Ritz Crackers
Coca-Cola Cans
Perdue Whole Chicken

Fresh Grocer

Today my group and I went to the Fresh Grocer Super Market on Broad and Cecil B. Moore. While we were there we looked around at the many items that are sold there and also there prices. While I was there I noticed that the super markets places certain items close together to make sure that we the consumers buy both of the products. For example, the chips were next to the the sodas and many people drink soda while they eat their chips. Another example is in the bread aisle; beside the bread was mayo on one side and cans of tuna fish on the other side. The super market places things that will catch the consumers eyes. I also noticed that on the fruits and vegetables it tells us where they came from. For example, some of the apples were products of The US, dried chili's were products of Canada, organic bananas were products of Ecuador, and the pineapples were products of Costa Rica. One last thing that i noticed while i was in the juice aisle was that the brand Arizona Iced Tea Green Tea was $1.99 for a 64oz and the brand Zeigler's Green Tea was $2.99 for a 64oz It's because the Zeigler's Green Tea is made from leaves and this process is pretty long because the worms and bugs eats the leaves which they can not use so they have to wait to for more to grow. On the other hand, Arizona 's Green Tea is really nothing but sugar and water. I enjoyed myself while at Fresh Grocer and i noticed a lot of things that i normally don't pay attention to so the next time I go to a super market I will pay more attention.

The Fresh Grocer

Today we went to the Fresh Grocer. There wasn't anything suprising in the store because I have been grocery shopping many times before but I did notice some things that I never noticed before. Some food items were much more expensive than other items and some thing were a lot cheaper. The Farmer's Market and grocery store were a little different from each other but in some ways they were the same. For example, both the Farmer's Market and grocery store sold both raw and cooked meats and sea food. Also, there were a lot of baked goods to choose from. I did notice the difference in price between different brands and companies that produce certain foods. The name brand foods were a little more expensive than the store brand foods. Some companies produce more products than others. Kelloggs for example, produces a lot of types of and other breakfast foods.

The Fresh Grocer

In the Fresh Grocer I saw many kinds of potato chips is cost 2 for $6.00 And other thing in the supermarkets I saw a lot kind of soda is crush is sugars and it cost 4 for $5.00. And I even saw many kind of meat in the meat section is chicken strip it cost $4.49 l.And I saw chicken liver in the meat section it cost $1.44 .And other thing I saw pancake it cost $2.49 .And I saw the Bologna was in the meat section. And I saw they got so many fruit and vegetable in the fruit and vegetable section. And I saw they got ice cream and some frozen food in the frozen section. And I saw yogurt and milk in the dairy section.

Fresh Grocer

I noticed that the Fresh Grocer had way more things then the reading terminal such as food, soda, fruit, and vegetables because they expect more people to go to the market then the reading terminal;also i noticed that when we was in the market i saw so many cheap things when we was at reading terminal i saw so many expensive things. Also I saw that the chicken wasn't really fresh in I noticed that the Cherry's that I have brought from the fresh grocer wasn't as fresh as the ones in the farming market because the taste was way different.

Urban Archives

I liked the urban archives because it was like history from our communities. As we looked in the maps we noticed that the things that are here now wasn't there in the past such as my community we have a park called pleasant park but that park wasn't there back then. Also I noticed that back then things were cheaper such as food, clothes, fruits, shoes, and rent in they had sold of these things outside; now as of today the things are sold in stores in the prices have went up. I enjoyed the urban achieve because it have help me see that things have change over these servile years

Urban Archives

Yesterday, July 15th 2010. Me and a few group memebers took a tour of the Urban Archives located in the library building of temple. There we found interesting facts on community gardens and different sections of our home town dating back to the 1900's. I personally found the Urban Archives very interesting because of the several different subjects and topics I could find information on. There were over 7 million files to research topics from. There were actual articles and pictures from The Bullentin News Paper. You could see the discoloration of the news letter from aging. Which also meant that it was more delicate and had to be handled with care, Otherwise it will easily tear. I enjoyed my experience at The Urban Archives, and would like to go back sometimes to research a topic of choice.

What I like most about the Urban Archives

I like the maps. It showed pictures of maps of Philadelphia from forty years ago. I saw pictures of Reading Terminal many years ago. I saw vendors selling food, fruits and vegetables in particular. They sell chicken.

Reading Terminal

On Wednesday, we visited the Reading Terminal. It was very different from what I had expected since I have never been there before. When we were there, I noticed that it was a lot of seafood places, bakeries, and places that sold meat, fruits and vegetables. It was different from what I expected because I thought it was going to be just fruits and vegetables being sold there, but there was a lot of other foods to choose from. The best thing about the Reading Terminal was all of the cookies, cakes, and other desserts being sold there. Also, it gave me a chance to see things that I never saw before like the different flavors of honey and food that comes from other cultures. The trip to the Reading Terminal was a great experience and I hope I can go back one day soon.

Reading Terminal

My trip to the Reading Terminal was good because of the very awesome chocolate chip cookies that I brought. They were very sweet and had big chucks of chocolate. I can honestly say those cookies made my day because we still had to go when it was raining. It was very busy in the terminal. Lots of people wanting their fruits and fish and other products. There were a lot of nice flowers that were being sold throughout the market.Everywhere you turned you smelled good food being cooked, people selling their products, and families having fun.

Urban Archive

What I liked about the Urban Archive was when we got to see our neighborhoods from back in the day. We got to see what was there before us and parents came into the world. My neighborhood is Diamond street and its the same from 1942 until 2010.Nothing has changed but the people that lived in the buildings.

I saw pictures of the Gallery and the Reading Terminal. The Gallery had 125 shops and restaurants in 1977. I wonder how many stores there is in 2010. The Reading Terminal changed from 1948 until 2010. It changed the way it looked and you could look at the food before you buy it and pick the meat and fruit that you want.

Urban Archives

On July 15, 2010 my group and I visited the Paley Library on Temple's campus. While we were there we received a tour of the Urban Archives center. As we walked around i noticed some maps and news paper clippings that talked about my neighborhood. I learned a lot about Philadelphia in the 20th century. A lot of people use the Urban Archives as a good source for research. While we were there we broke up into groups and answered questions using old newspaper clippings, maps, photos, and pamphlets. I enjoyed this activity. While i was looking at the maps I compared them to how my neighborhood looks now and there were only a few differences. One difference that I saw was that it didn't show the old Veterans Stadium which today is called the Citizens Bank Park. Another difference that i saw was that near Delaware Ave there were nothing bout Ships and docks and also fish markets which today there are no fish markets and the docks are closed down. I would love to go back to the Urban Archives one day and use all that information as a good source for research.

Food Inc.

I think that animals do have a quality of life. Most animals that live on a farm are raised to give people needs such as meat, dairy products and other materials. That is why I think it is a shame that people would do stuff that could harm these animals since they are needed in our lives.

I think that people have the right to know what is in their food because people should be aware of what is put inside their bodies so they can know whether or not the stuff is safe for them. I also think that people are responsible for asking questions about what they are eating and the sellers/producers are also responsible for letting people know what is inside these foods.

The way our grandparents used to eat is different from the way we eat today because back then people weren't exposed to the technology and growth hormones that we have today, so food was probably much more safe and natural than it is today.

Topics on food inc.

Do people have the right to know whats in their food?
Yes, people have the right to know whats in their food because some people might be allergic to some things that people put in food. Some people might not like or don't want the things that the supermarket or fast food restaurants put in the foods we eat.

Do animals have a quality of life?
Yes, animals have a quality of life because they are living and breathing just like humans are. They have a family to take care of and look after.

Whose responsibility do you think is it to inform us what's in our foods?
The manufacture who sell the food should be responsible to let people know whats in the food because they are the ones that sell the product. The product should come marked with whats in the food and the calories.

How Food, Inc made me think

As far as I am concerned when it comes to the movie of Food, Inc it makes you think. You see what people are doing to animals and to the food that humans are eating every single day. It's creul not just to the animals but to us what they are doing to these animals and to our food. People are dying because farmers are worried about the money they are or not making. This new conventional farming outdated the old fashion safe farming when things were done by the hands them self. Now we can't even tust everything we eat now a days. Most farmers turned to corn and it is not always a safe choice. When farmers fed cows with corn instead of its needed grass it caught unseen diseases that spread and made plenty of people sick. Animals do not enjoy life or have that equal quality that they should have to ensure our safety and it's taking a huge toll on our way of life.

Things About Food Inc.

Do people have a right to no what is in there food ?
I think that people should have right to no whats in there food because aot of people don't no what they are these days they can be putting any kind of things in these food in people can get sick from those thing.

Do animals have a quality life ?
I think that animals do have a quality life because they are just like human beings they eat breath walk and run they do thing just like regular humans.
What can people do to be better informed about what is in the food they eat ?
I think that people can be better informed about what is inside there food by askin them;and by lookin up what you eat on the internet.

Topics On Food Inc.

I do not believe that animals have a quality of live because they are breeding them so fast that are unable to walk two step without falling to the ground. But this was there point so that they would be able to kill them without any problem from the animals. People should know what they are about to eat, i believe its only right to everyone. But there are some who wold rather not know because than they might change their mind if they should eat it or not. It might be a problem that majority of our food is made out of soy or corn is that a lot of it is in most of the food that we eat and to much of something is not a good thing.

The people who makes our food should be the ones to tell us what exactly we about to eat. I think that if really wants to know whats in their food they should look at the labels. Maybe call the company and ask.

Topics on Food Inc

Food Inc was a very interesting movie. I learned so much about the food production process and also about what is really in our food. Watching this movie has sort of change my thinking when it comes to food. I think that this movie is very important because people do have the right to be informed about what's in their food. I was so surprised to find out that corn is so prevalent in the many food products that many people eat such as, cheese itz, ketchup, and even coca cola. I would have never known that. I think that the food companies and the FDA are responsible for informing us about what's in our food. It's also our responsibility to tells others and make sure that everyone is informed about what they are eating and about what's in our food.

Photo from:http://gaetanpelletier.files.wordpress.com/2010/01/food-inc-poster.jpg

Do animals have quality of life?

Yes they do because the animals could do anything want if they do not want to caught and they could anything they want like the lion could roar really loud and the monkey could pepping and they could be mad at people if they got out in the cage and elephant they uses their nose to drink water and they like to eats peanuts and suck anything they work in the circus likes monkey do and whales could be in the water and sometimes people could be traps insides the whales of they comes out in the whales holes

Food Inc

Do people have the right to know what's in their food?
Yes, because people don't want to eat some of the material that the company puts in their food products.

Whose responsibility do you think is it to inform in what's in our food?

The government because they have to inform citizens of what is placed in the food that companies produce.

Farmer Market Visit

Thursday july 8, 2010 was my first visit to a farmers market. I didn't know quite what to expect out of this farmers market so it all came to my surprise. There was a varieties of fruits and veggies to choose from that are freshly grown from the sellers farm. On this particular day the group voted cherries for a taste test. Our wonderful mentor went around the group and gave us all a cherry and to my suprise they tasted awesome. So if i could i would definitely be interested in visiting again. It was a great experience and I would use that time to ask these questions:
1.How long does it take to grow cherries to perfection?

2.Which of your freshly grown products sell more often?

3.Does it take alot of labor and hard work to grow these items?

4.Are these products beneficial to your costumers?

Farmer's Market

My first time at the farmer's market was last Thursday. I like it there. I like to buy cherries there someday. This Thursday, I really want to try some raspberries.

Questions for the farmer's market:
What other types of fruits do you sell?
What kind of snacks do they sell?

Farmer's Market

On Thursday, July 8, 2010, my group and I went to visit the Farmer's Market on Broad and Cecil B. Moore. The Farmer's Market is an organic supermarket. They have products from cherries to milk. While I was there I sampled some beef jerky and some cherries. They both were very delicious. The cherries were very sweet compared to the ones my mother buys at the supermarket and the beef jerky were dryer than the ones that is packaged at the supermarket;but I still enjoyed their taste.
I really enjoyed myself while at the Farmer's Market and I am very interested in going back again someday.

Questions for The Farmer's Market
1. How long does it take for the crops to grow?
2. Which crop grows the fastest?
3. Which crop is the most profitable?

Farmer's Market

My experience at the Farmer's Market was different because i have never actually been to one before. I really enjoyed going. The cherry's that we had to me tasted like gapes but than when i got to like the fourth one they didn't really start to taste to good to me. I would not mind going back to the Framer's Market, it would be nice.

Farmersmarket

Farmer's Market

My experience at the Farmer's Market on Thursday was very interesting. It was way smaller than what I expected. The fruits and vegetables seemed to be more ripe and fresh compared to the Farmer's Markets that I have been to throughout the city. I would like to go back to the Farmer's Market because I really didn't get the chance to ask alot of questions or the chance to buy anything.
